Dr. Cheryl Shafer was named Chief Medical Officer at Molina Healthcare of South Carolina in January 2014. She received her B.S. from the University of Charleston in Charleston, West Virginia, and her M.D. from Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington, West Virginia. Before becoming Chief Medical Officer at Molina, Dr. Shafer served as a leader in medical management for key corporate health plans throughout the US. Her past roles include that of clinical advisor to Humana, Medical Director for Policy and Innovation for WellCare Healthplan, Senior Medical Director at Wellcare in Lexington, Kentucky, and as National Medical Director for the Optum’s Public Sector Nurse Advice Line and Disease Management, and Health Care Decision Support group at United Health Group in West Virginia. In addition, Dr. Shafer worked in Arizona as the medical director Health Net of Arizona where she also served as Medical Director and Hospitalist in Scottsdale, Arizona at the Mayo Clinic, and as Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs at Maricopa Integrated Health Systems. Decidedly experienced in Commercial, Medicare and Medicaid plans, she continues to work to improve clinical outcomes, and deliver on behalf of Molina Healthcare’s members by urging clinical innovation to improve the quality of care. She is a frequent speaker at leading business and industry forums and holds medical licenses in 8 states. She currently resides in Mt Pleasant, South Carolina.
